Shopify Editions Fall 2026: Every Major Update and What It Means for Your Store

Shopify released its Fall '26 Edition on October 28, 2026. Shopify named it "Exponential" and gave it the tagline "Everything new for non-linear growth."1 The launch email to merchants promised "150+ updates like flexible store design, your products discovered by more AI personal shoppers, and better fraud prevention."2 Those three phrases are the headline. Under them sit eleven product areas, a rebuilt Sidekick, a new theme architecture, and a set of developer deadlines that will break real stores if nobody acts on them.
This is the overview. It covers every major change, separates what you can use today from what is "coming soon," and explains what each one means for store owners and for the developers and agencies who build on Shopify. Over the next few days we will publish a deeper piece on the biggest areas, each researched on the day it goes out.
The short version
- AI shopping is now the center of Shopify. Shop.md turns any AI agent into a personal shopper that can search over a billion products and check out with Shop Pay. Shop Pay checkout now works inside personal agents, starting with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct.3 Shopify says "every Shopify store is agent-ready by default."4
- Canvas changes how stores get designed. You see your whole store on one canvas and edit it by talking to Sidekick. It is in early access, and it ships without support for third-party themes, app blocks, markets or translations.38
- A new theme architecture is coming. Page structure moves out of JSON files and into the Liquid template itself, with built-in Tailwind and markdown files that guide AI agents.4
- Sidekick was rebuilt. It now handles multi-step technical work, remembers context, and tests its suggestions before you apply them.1
- Fraud tools are bigger, but mostly not here yet. Shopify Protect gets pre-authorization blocking, custom risk rules and AI-written dispute responses. The Editions page labels these "rolling out soon."1
- Developers have dates to hit. The Global Catalog REST API stops on November 2, 2026. Public apps must move to expiring offline tokens by January 1, 2027. Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefronts on March 1, 2027.567
- The public reaction is still forming. The early signal from theme developers is hostile. The early signal on AI shopping is cautious.
What is Shopify Editions Fall 2026?
Shopify Editions is Shopify's twice-yearly product release, a single page that bundles hundreds of updates across the whole platform. The Fall '26 Edition went live on October 28, 2026, with three companion posts on the Shopify newsroom: one for merchants, one for developers, and an interview with VP of Product Vanessa Lee.349
The Editions page groups the release into eleven sections: Agentic, Sidekick, Online, Merchandising, Retail, Payments, Operations, Shop, Marketing, Fulfillment and Developer.1 The "150+ updates" count comes from Shopify's launch email. The Editions page itself does not state a total.2
Some of what Shopify calls new shipped earlier in October. Canvas started rolling out on October 1, Shop MCP went live on October 13, and Hydrogen 2026-10 became generally available on October 14.81011 The Edition is the moment Shopify packaged all of it into one story.
The idea behind "Exponential"
The name is the thesis. Shopify's argument is that every merchant on the platform makes the platform better for every other merchant. Vanessa Lee put it this way: "Every merchant that joins Shopify benefits from every other merchant that has ever been on Shopify. And they make it better for whoever comes next."3
You can see that idea in almost every headline feature. Fraud signals are shared across stores. Sidekick's advice draws on what works for other merchants. The catalog that AI agents search is the combined catalog of every store. Shopify's pitch is that a merchant on Shopify gets the benefit of the network. A merchant on a standalone platform does not.
1. AI personal shoppers: your products inside AI agents
This is the biggest part of the release, and the part that will change how many stores make sales over the next year.
What shipped
- Shop.md. Shopify describes it as "a skill that turns any AI agent into a personal shopper." A shopper points ChatGPT, Claude or another agent at shop.md. The agent can then search more than a billion products, check out with Shop Pay and track orders.3
- Shop Pay inside personal agents. Shop Pay checkout now works inside personal AI agents, "starting with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet, and Instinct." Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct also offer Shop Pay for brands that are not on Shopify.3
- Google Search and Gemini. Merchants can sell in Google Search, including AI Mode, and in the Gemini app, with checkout powered by Shopify.1 We covered why those sales are easy to miss in Google AI Mode checkout on Shopify.
- Agent-ready by default. Browser agents can use WebMCP tools on every Liquid and Hydrogen storefront to "search products, update the cart, and complete checkout once the buyer approves."4
- Merchant controls. Compare-at prices now reach AI agents through Shopify Catalog with no setup. A Catalog eligibility check tells you whether your store qualifies and what to fix. A new screen lets you review and approve the policies and FAQs that agents see about your business.1
- Agents that run your store, not just shop it. Agent connectors let Grok, Google Gemini, Meta's Muse and Microsoft Copilot manage products, orders, inventory and discounts. You can also pin Shopify in the ChatGPT sidebar to see sales and conversion rate.1
The numbers Shopify is using
Shopify says "1B+ products in our catalog can get discovered across AI channels" and counts "400M+ shoppers with Shop Pay accounts" as of September 30, 2026.1 That second number is the real asset. An AI agent can only complete a purchase if it can pay. Shop Pay gives agents a saved payment method for hundreds of millions of people, which is why Shopify can put checkout inside agents it does not own.
What it means for store owners
Your products may now be found and bought by people who never visit your website. That is good for reach. It raises three practical questions:
- Is your product data good enough for a machine to read? Agents rely on titles, descriptions, variants, compare-at prices and policies. Thin or messy product data loses to a competitor's clean data. Run the Catalog eligibility check and fix what it flags.
- What does the agent say about your business? Review the policies and FAQs in the new business details screen. If an agent misstates your returns policy, the customer blames you.
- Who owns the customer? Shopify's own interviewer raised the worry directly: "Some worry about losing the customer relationship." Lee's answer: "No. The order is still the merchant's. The customer relationship is still the merchant's." She says AI-channel orders land in your admin "with the customer's name, email, and shipping details, just like any other sale."9 That is reassuring on the order. It says less about the browsing, comparison and brand experience that now happens inside someone else's interface.
We wrote the practical checklist for the September rollout in Shopify agentic checkout: what changed and your to-do list. Most of it still applies, and this Edition widens it.
What it means for developers
Shop.dev is the developer side: "a single connection to Shopify Catalog, sign-in with Shop, cart, checkout, and Shop Pay," usable "with no key required."4 Shop MCP, live since October 13, exposes catalog search, carts and Shop Pay checkout through one MCP server.10 The Editions page also lists Promoted Placements in early access: developers who drive sales through the Catalog API earn the commission a business sets in Shop Campaigns, plus 0.3% from Shopify.1 Shopify is paying developers to build shopping agents on top of its catalog.
2. Canvas and the new theme architecture: "flexible store design"
What Canvas is
Canvas shows your entire store on one canvas and lets you edit it with Sidekick, "from small tweaks to full redesigns." It is in early access.3 Shopify claims stores go "from no theme to a launched store 20% faster with Canvas," without saying how it measured that.1 You can also design a store inside ChatGPT, Claude and similar tools.1
What Canvas cannot do yet
TechCrunch reported at the October 1 launch that Canvas does not support "third-party theme support, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts, and theme updates," and that "Canvas is desktop-only." Shopify told TechCrunch it plans to add these over time.8 Shopify's own developer forum post at launch said "there is not yet full backwards compatibility with 3P themes."12
For a store running a paid third-party theme, several apps and more than one market, that list covers most of what makes the store work. Canvas today suits new stores and simple stores. Established stores should wait.
The architecture underneath
The bigger change for agencies is the new theme architecture, in developer preview. "Page structure now lives in the Liquid template itself instead of a separate JSON file." It adds blocks, typed contracts, partial updates, markdown files that guide AI agents, and built-in Tailwind styling. Themes built on it can be edited with Sidekick in Canvas.4 The Editions page adds that pages now load only the CSS they use.1
This is the third big theme shift in two years, after Online Store 2.0 and Horizon. We explained Horizon's structure in Shopify Horizon theme explained, and the build-or-customize decision in Horizon vs a custom theme. Both are about to need a new chapter.
3. Sidekick, rebuilt
Shopify says daily Sidekick sessions "have grown 4.2x year over year."1 The Fall '26 version is a different tool from the chat assistant most merchants tried last year. According to the Editions page, Sidekick now:
- Handles technical, multi-step tasks. It can compute, write code and search the web, and it keeps context between sessions.
- Tests its recommendations in SimGym, Shopify's simulated shopper environment, before you apply them.
- Builds a plan of several changes that you approve once.
- Floats on every admin page and drives a personalized admin home.
- Creates and edits draft orders with highlighted differences, designs print-on-demand products, gives pricing advice and answers payments questions.
- Reads theme markdown files that teach it your theme's structure and design preferences.1
For developers, apps can now start Sidekick conversations through App Bridge.1
What it means: Sidekick is moving from "ask a question" to "do the work." That is useful for routine admin. It also means more changes to your live store happen through an AI that acts on your instructions. Treat Sidekick's multi-change plans the way you would treat a junior developer's pull request. Read the diff before you approve it.
4. Fraud prevention: Shopify Protect
Fraud is the third headline in the launch email, and the timing is deliberate with Black Friday weeks away.
What Shopify announced
Shopify Protect becomes a broader set of risk and dispute tools that "help stop fraud at checkout and help fight chargebacks automatically."3 The Editions page lists:
- Blocking high-risk orders before authorization.
- Explanations of what raised an order's risk.
- Custom risk rules you can write and backtest, with drift alerts. The merchant post calls this the Protect Rule Builder.3
- AI-written dispute responses by bank and reason code, with carrier delivery proof attached automatically.
- Chargeback protection extended to orders that did not use Shop Pay, marked "coming soon."1
Lee explained the network angle: "We can recognize when the same card or address is used at different stores on Shopify. So if they've attacked one store and go to another, we can deny them."9
The numbers, and the catch
Shopify says Shopify Payments "prevents more than 12,000 high-risk payments every minute, at no extra cost to businesses using it."3 It also claims "60% more 'product not received' disputes won with Shopify Protect."1 Neither figure comes with a methodology. More important for this holiday season, the Editions page labels Shopify Protect's new features "rolling out soon."1 Do not plan your Black Friday fraud setup around tools you cannot switch on yet. Our Shopify fraud prevention guide and chargeback reduction playbook cover what works today.
5. Payments, tax and selling internationally
- Shopify Tax managed mode. Shopify calculates, collects and remits US state sales tax for new merchants.1
- Managed Markets. All-in international prices, guaranteed duties and taxes, and flat shipping. Shopify says "brands saw +50% higher international conversion with Shopify Managed Markets."1
- Seven new local payment methods, including Alipay, WeChat Pay, Satispay, Scalapay, GrabPay, MB WAY and OXXO.13
- Multi-entity payments. Shopify Payments can run across separate businesses, with a different provider per legal entity.1
- Multi-currency payouts in Australia, France, Singapore and Hong Kong, limited to Advanced and Plus plans.1
- HSA/FSA spending in Shop Pay (US, coming soon) through Truemed, and Shop Pay Installments in early access in Australia.1
- Checkout changes. Custom fields (text, date, checkbox, choice), a tiled payment layout and a thank-you animation are "rolling out soon." Apple Pay via QR code is "coming soon."1
If you sell in more than one country, the Managed Markets and multi-entity changes deserve a close look. Our comparison of Shopify Markets vs separate stores is the starting point for that decision.
6. Retail and POS
The headline is in-store recognition. Shopify POS can now recognize more customers at the counter, drawing on the Shopify Payments checkout network, and shoppers can opt in to digital receipts by email, SMS or the Shop app.39 Lee: "our data shows that a known in-store customer has an over 60% higher lifetime value."9
The rest is practical: faster cash and split payments, filtered POS search, local delivery booked at the counter, staff loading a known customer's abandoned online cart, device management from admin, scheduled stock counts, receipts with automatic EU, UK and Canada tax summaries, and up to 20 barcodes per variant.1 Organization-level staff roles are Plus only.1
7. Marketing and the Shop app
- Campaign Autopilot runs AI ad campaigns on Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat, with X Ads "coming soon," plus SEO. Lee says it has "rolled out to every merchant on Shopify," and that merchants "set their budget, approve anything before it goes live, and can adjust anytime."19
- ChatGPT Ads. Merchants can advertise inside ChatGPT conversations and track sponsored placements in admin.1 We broke down how this ad format works in ChatGPT sponsored agents and click-to-chat ads.
- Shop Campaigns expands to over 35 new markets on a pay-per-sale model. Shopify says it "has led to over 18M sales for businesses."1
- WhatsApp marketing consent at checkout and abandoned-cart automations, plus a pre-built Black Friday email series.1
- The Shop app gets a universal multi-brand cart, a redesigned shop.com, personalized discovery and Instagram sync for shoppable reels.1
8. Shipping, operations and the admin
- Shop Promise is now "a free Shopify program for eligible US stores." Badged products can rank higher in Shop app search, and eligibility has grown 20x.3
- New carrier coverage: DHL Express labels in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain; UPS international labels from Canada; Canada Post return labels billed only when scanned; FedEx delivery photos as dispute proof; Royal Mail pickup points.1
- Market-based shipping and returns rules, discounts on existing orders, and subscriptions in draft orders.1
- The admin redesign is rolling out to every page, with Sidekick within reach everywhere.13 Passkeys, faster admin search, file folders and 13 more admin languages also arrive.1
9. For developers and agencies: what changed
The headless stack
Hydrogen 2026-10, generally available since October 14, "now works with any JavaScript framework." It is now a library you add to an existing app rather than a framework you build on, with starters for React Router and Next.js. Existing Hydrogen storefronts "keep working as they do now," Oxygen hosting "is still free," and the release ships 20 skills that teach coding agents how to use it.11 Vercel Shop, an open-source Next.js template built on the Hydrogen SDK, is generally available.4
That is a big shift from the Remix-era Hydrogen. If you weighed Hydrogen vs Next.js before, the answer may now be "both." Our headless Shopify guide for 2026 covers when headless is worth it at all.
Platform and tooling
- Polaris: 14 new component APIs, with Polaris 2.0 stable on the CDN.1
- Events reached general availability with API 2026-10, covering 18 topics. Apps can define and send events that merchants analyze in Shopify Analytics.14
- Security: a single CLI command,
shopify app security check, "checks an app for the most common vulnerability patterns," such as unauthenticated routes, cross-shop data access and unverified webhooks.46 - Partner earnings: a revenue share for four years on every business a partner brings to Shopify, on all plans.1
The deadlines that matter
| Date | What happens | Who it affects |
|---|---|---|
| October 1, 2026 (passed) | Apps can no longer create or update script tags. Existing ones keep running. | Apps that inject storefront JavaScript |
| November 2, 2026 | The Global Catalog REST API stops serving traffic. Move to Global Catalog MCP (UCP). | Anything calling discover.shopifyapps.com/global |
| January 1, 2027 | Public apps still on non-expiring offline tokens are delisted and blocked from new installs. | Public App Store apps |
| January 15, 2027 | Merchants using those apps see a warning in admin. | Merchants and their app vendors |
| March 1, 2027 | Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefront pages. The script stops loading. | Any store still relying on script tags |
| April 1, 2027 | Admin API calls with non-expiring offline tokens return HTTP 403. | Public apps that did not migrate |
Sources: Shopify developer changelog and documentation.567 Custom apps, merchant-created apps and online access tokens are exempt from the token change.6
The script tag date is the one most likely to break a merchant's store without warning. Admin-created custom apps cannot use theme app extensions or web pixels, so Shopify has no replacement for them. The script has to move into the theme or be rebuilt as a real app.7 If you have not checked which of your apps and custom scripts still use script tags, an app audit is the place to start.
What is live, and what is not
| Feature | Status at launch |

Status as labeled on Shopify's Editions page, merchant post and developer post on October 28, 2026.1341011 Shopify rarely gives dates for "coming soon."
How people are receiving it
The Edition is hours old as we publish, so most of the reaction so far is to pieces that shipped earlier in October. That earlier reaction is a decent preview.
Theme developers are angry. When Shopify announced Canvas on its developer forum, the only reply was one word: "Slopify."12 A separate thread titled "Is This Real? Theme store is dead?" started with a developer reporting that their theme was on page one for relevance "but traffic has almost completely disappeared." Another replied that views "have been declining day by day throughout the entire year now" and that it is "going to get even worst when they release Canvas to everybody." A third wrote: "Shopify do not care about developer. This is clearer than ever."13 If AI builds the store and Shopify's own architecture defines the theme, third-party theme sellers have reason to worry.
Merchants are cautious about AI shopping. Shopify itself raised the customer-relationship worry in its own interview.9 Shopify's holiday research post found that "only one-third of shoppers" said they trusted an AI agent to buy on their behalf.14
The admin redesign has critics. A roundup of October merchant threads by Jacques Blom, CTO of Fudge, called the new admin "the loudest complaint by far": about a dozen Shopify Community threads about the dark sidebar, a Sidekick bar that cannot be hidden, slower metafield editing and "the J and K keyboard shortcuts disappearing." He found that none of those threads had a staff reply.15 The Edition confirms the redesign is rolling out to every page.
Shopify does fix things quickly when developers report them. When app developers reported that Cumulative Layout Shift scores rose across their apps after the new admin went live, a Shopify staff member replied the same day: "We've deployed a fix here."16
We will cover the reaction to each area in its own article as the community catches up.
What store owners should do this week
- Run the Catalog eligibility check and fix your product data. Titles, variants, compare-at prices and policies are now read by machines as well as people.
- Review what AI agents say about you on the new business details screen. Approve or correct the policies and FAQs.
- Do not plan Black Friday around "coming soon" tools. Shopify Protect's new features are not switched on yet. Set up your fraud rules with what exists today.
- Ask your developer or agency about script tags. Anything still using them stops loading on March 1, 2027. Custom scripts in admin-created apps have no automatic replacement.
- Leave Canvas alone on an established store until it supports your theme, your apps and your markets. Try it on a test store first.
- Read Sidekick's plans before you approve them. It now changes things, not just suggests them.
What developers and agencies should do
- Migrate public apps to expiring offline tokens before January 1, 2027. Shopify says the later dates "should not be treated as extra time to migrate."6
- Move off the Global Catalog REST API before November 2.5
- Audit client stores for script tags and plan the move to app embed blocks or web pixels.7
- Run
shopify app security checkon every app before release.6 - Start learning the new theme architecture in developer preview. Liquid-defined page structure, typed contracts and Tailwind will reshape how custom themes get built.
- Re-evaluate headless builds now that Hydrogen is a library that works with Next.js.
What we will cover next
This is the first article in a series on the Fall '26 Edition. Each follow-up goes deep on one area and is researched on the day it is published, including how merchants and developers are responding by then. The areas we expect to cover are AI personal shoppers and agentic checkout, Canvas and the new theme architecture, Shopify Protect and fraud before Black Friday, the developer deadlines, and Hydrogen as a library with Next.js. We will link each one here as it goes live.
If you want help deciding which of these changes matter for your store, our Shopify development team can review your setup and give you a scoped plan within 48 hours.
Frequently asked questions
What is Shopify Editions Fall 2026?
It is Shopify's Fall '26 product release, named "Exponential," published on October 28, 2026. Shopify's launch email describes it as 150+ updates. The Editions page groups them into eleven areas, led by AI shopping agents, Canvas store design, a rebuilt Sidekick and Shopify Protect fraud tools.
When was the Shopify Fall '26 Edition released?
October 28, 2026. Several parts shipped earlier in October: Canvas began rolling out on October 1, Shop MCP went live on October 13, and Hydrogen 2026-10 became generally available on October 14.
What is Shopify Canvas?
Canvas shows your whole store on one canvas and lets you edit it by talking to Sidekick, from small tweaks to full redesigns. It is in early access. At launch it did not support third-party themes, app blocks, markets, translations, rollouts or theme updates, and it was desktop-only.
What is Shop.md?
Shop.md is a skill that turns an AI agent such as ChatGPT or Claude into a personal shopper. The agent can search more than a billion products, check out with Shop Pay and track orders.
Can AI agents buy from my Shopify store?
Yes. Shopify says every Shopify store is agent-ready by default. Browser agents can search products, update the cart and complete checkout once the buyer approves, and Shop Pay checkout works inside personal agents starting with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct.
Do I own the customer when an AI agent makes the sale?
Shopify says yes. Its VP of Product says AI-channel orders land in your admin with the customer's name, email and shipping details, like any other sale. The browsing and comparison happen inside the agent, not on your site.
Is the new Shopify Protect available now?
Mostly not. The Editions page labels Shopify Protect's new features "rolling out soon," and chargeback protection for orders that did not use Shop Pay is "coming soon." Shopify Payments' existing high-risk payment blocking already runs.
What deadlines do Shopify developers need to know?
The Global Catalog REST API stops on November 2, 2026. Public apps must move to expiring offline tokens by January 1, 2027, and non-migrated tokens get HTTP 403 from April 1, 2027. Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefronts on March 1, 2027.
Does Hydrogen still require React Router?
No. Hydrogen 2026-10 is a library that works with any JavaScript framework, with starters for React Router and Next.js. Existing Hydrogen storefronts keep working with no change needed, and Oxygen hosting is still free.
