AI Shopping Agents on Shopify: How Shop.md and Shop Pay Let AI Buy From Your Store

An AI shopping agent is software, like ChatGPT, Claude or Meta's Muse, that searches for products, compares them and, increasingly, buys them for a person. Shopify's Fall '26 Edition, released on October 28, 2026, made every Shopify store something those agents can shop. Shopify's developer post puts it plainly: "Every Shopify store is agent-ready by default."1 If you sell on Shopify, your products are probably already discoverable by AI agents, and some agents can now complete the purchase without the shopper ever loading your website.

This is the second article in our series on the Fall '26 Edition. The overview covers the whole release. This one goes deep on AI personal shoppers: how they work, what they mean for your margins and your data, what you can switch off, what you cannot, and how merchants and developers are reacting a day after launch. For the checkout mechanics Shopify shipped in September, see Shopify agentic checkout: what changed and your to-do list.

The short version

  • Shop.md turns any AI agent into a personal shopper. A shopper points ChatGPT, Claude or another agent at shop.md, and the agent can search more than a billion products, check out with Shop Pay and track orders.2
  • Shop Pay now works inside personal AI agents, starting with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct.2 The shopper approves each purchase by default, and the agent never sees the full card number.34
  • Your store is probably already in. "Agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores."5 Eligible products are "automatically discoverable by AI channels through Shopify Catalog."6
  • Opting out is partial. Turning off agentic storefronts does not remove your products from Shopify Catalog or from the Shop app. The only full hide is setting a product to Unlisted, which also removes it from Google and your own site search.67
  • It is free today, but the terms allow a fee. Each channel's help page says there are no fees beyond payment processing. Shopify's supplemental terms, updated October 6, 2026, say it "may, in its discretion, assess a fee" per channel.89
  • Your analytics will miss some of these sales. Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire on Google AI Mode, Gemini or Meta direct checkouts.1011
  • The reaction is split. Developers and analysts are impressed. Merchants who wanted a real opt-out are angry, and nobody has settled who pays when an agent buys the wrong thing.

What is Shop.md?

Shop.md is a skill, a set of instructions and tools an AI agent loads, that Shopify describes as "a skill that turns any AI agent into a personal shopper."2 A shopper adds it to ChatGPT or Claude, or copies a prompt from shop.md into another agent. From then on, the agent can:

  • Search Shopify Catalog, which Shopify says holds "more than a billion products."
  • Build a cart and check out with Shop Pay.
  • Track the order afterward.2

Under the hood, the skill connects to Shop MCP, a single server at mcp.shop.com that exposes catalog search, carts and Shop Pay checkout to any agent.12 Shopper sign-in is optional for searching. Shop Pay and saved addresses need the shopper to sign in with Shop.

The pitch to shoppers is simple: describe what you want in plain language, let the agent find it, approve the purchase. The pitch to merchants is reach. In Shopify's words, "More shoppers using shop.md means more places merchants can make a sale."2

Which AI agents can buy from Shopify stores?

There are two different things here, and the difference matters for your store.

Personal agents act for one shopper and pay with Shop Pay. AI channels are the big assistants where your products appear, and some of them run checkout inside their own interface.

Personal agents with Shop Pay

Agent Where it can buy Notes
Muse (Meta) Shopify stores only "In Muse, you can use Shop Pay only for purchases from stores on Shopify."3
Claude Duet (Anthropic) Any online store Research preview for Claude Pro and Max plans in the US. Asks before each purchase.4
Instinct Any online store Listed on Shop's help page.3
Grok Bot (xAI) Listed by Shopify Named on Shopify's Editions page and merchant post. Not yet on Shop's help page.213

Shopify's merchant post says Shop Pay checkout is in personal agents "starting with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet, and Instinct," and that "Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Instinct also offer Shop Pay for brands not on Shopify."2

AI channels where your products appear

Channel Where checkout happens Shopper regions
ChatGPT Your own store checkout. "Customers using ChatGPT are redirected to buy products in your online store checkout."14 Your store must sell to US customers.
Google AI Mode and Gemini Direct checkout inside Google, "rolling out gradually."10 US, Canada and Australia. Needs a Google Merchant Center account.
Microsoft Copilot Direct checkout inside Copilot, on by default.15 US only.
Meta (including Muse) Direct checkout on Meta surfaces, on by default.11 US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and Singapore.

ChatGPT is the outlier. It sends shoppers to your checkout, so your upsells, checkout extensions and analytics still run. On Google, Copilot and Meta, the purchase can complete without the shopper ever loading your site.

How does an AI agent pay, and is it safe?

This is the question every shopper asks first, and Shopify built the answer into Shop Pay.

  • Approval by default. Agents "prepare checkouts" with the shopper's details filled in, and the shopper reviews and approves every purchase.3
  • Optional autopay with a budget. A shopper can turn on "Allow agent to pay for me" and set a weekly, monthly or total budget. The agent then orders without asking each time, and the shopper can revoke it at any time.3
  • The card is never shared. At stores without Shop Pay, Shop can use a "limited-use payment credential, such as a token or one-time virtual card," and the shopper's "saved payment method details aren't shared with your agent or the store."3
  • One-time cards in Claude Duet. Each purchase uses "a one-time card that only works for that purchase." Claude can see the card type, last four digits and expiry, but not the full card number.4

Shopify's Editions page says agent purchases are "supported by Mastercard, Visa, and soon Amex."13 For a merchant, the important part is what this does not settle. A one-time token protects the shopper's card. It does not decide who absorbs the cost when an agent picks the wrong size.

Is my store already selling to AI agents?

Probably, if it is eligible. Shopify's help center says "Agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores," and the default setting, "Allow Shopify to manage for me," keeps every channel active, turns on direct checkout where supported, and enrolls you in new agentic storefronts automatically.57

Eligibility rules

You can check your status in Sales channels > Agentic, where an ineligibility reason appears next to Sources > Shopify Catalog if there is one.16 The main requirements:

  • Plan and store. "Your store must be on the Starter plan or higher," and it cannot be in private mode or password protected.
  • Products. Each product needs a title, at least one image, a price greater than zero, and must be published to your online store, Hydrogen or Headless channel.
  • Excluded categories. Alcohol, tobacco and vaping, weapons, adult content, prescription and medical products, services, event tickets, live animals, uncategorized products and several others are left out of Shopify Catalog.
  • Account standing. A track record of genuine sales, two-step authentication, low chargebacks and invoices paid on time.16

That category list hurts some stores badly. One knife retailer posted in October that "Shopify Catalog currently excludes 'Pocket Collectible Knives,' so only 31 of our 256 products show up there, and the rest can't be found through Shop, Shop MCP or AI shopping tools."17

What does it cost?

Today, nothing beyond your normal payment processing, according to every channel page we checked. ChatGPT: "There are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT." Google, Meta and Copilot direct checkout carry the same wording.10111415

The terms leave room for that to change. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service, last updated October 6, 2026, say: "For certain Participating Channels, Shopify may, in its discretion, assess a fee on transactions." Rates would be "set out in your Shopify Admin," and Shopify may offer a period "in which Agentic Storefronts Fees are discounted or waived." If you disable a channel after that period ends, you "will not be eligible for an additional Promotional Period" when you turn it back on.8

The practical reading: there is no fee now, the contract you accepted allows one later, and the place it would appear is your admin. Check Sales channels > Agentic every month, the same way you would check a new app's billing.

What you control, and what you cannot

This is where most merchant anger lives, so it is worth being precise.

What you can do

  • Turn off automatic management. In Sales channels > Agentic, deactivate "Allow Shopify to manage for me," then set Shopify Catalog access, auto-enrollment and direct checkout for each channel.7
  • Keep discovery but force your own checkout. With Catalog access on and direct checkout off, shoppers are "redirected from their AI chat to your online store" to buy.9
  • Cut off Catalog access to AI channels. With both off, channels "can't access your product data through Shopify Catalog going forward."9
  • Control what agents say about your business. The Knowledge Base, under Sales channels > Agentic > Sources, holds the store facts agents use: policies, shipping, returns, contact details. Shopify suggests updates from a scan of your store, and you approve or reject them. "Shopify never changes knowledge base content on your behalf." Published facts are public to AI channels, with a limit of 1,000 facts.18
  • Choose the price agents show. You can tell Shopify Catalog to use your compare-at price as the list price, so agents can show a markdown.6

What you cannot do

  • Remove your products from Shopify Catalog. "Removing agentic storefronts' access to your products doesn't remove your products from Shopify Catalog."9
  • Opt out of Shop. "Shop doesn't have the option for you to deactivate Shopify Catalog access."7 Products published to your online store stay discoverable in the Shop app and through Shop MCP.
  • Stop it with robots.txt. "Blocking AI crawlers at the /robots.txt or network layer affects only open-web discoverability." It does not stop Shopify Catalog sending data to the agentic storefronts you have active.6
  • Hide a product from AI without hiding it from Google. The full hide is the Unlisted status, which "also hides the product from sitemaps, search engines such as Google, and your online store search."6

So the honest answer to "can I opt out of AI shopping on Shopify?" is: you can opt out of most third-party AI checkout, but not out of Shopify's own Catalog and Shop. A merchant who does not want any AI agent touching a specific product has to give up search traffic for it.

Orders, customer data and analytics

Orders and customers

Orders from AI channels land in your admin "with channel or referrer attribution," and orders placed by personal agents show "attribution to the agent."5 On Meta, "You remain the merchant of record," and you still handle fulfillment, returns and customer service.11 On direct checkout orders, the AI channel receives the customer's name, email, phone number and address for that order, but not your order history or customer database.9

Shopify's VP of Product, Vanessa Lee, was asked whether merchants lose the customer relationship. Her answer: "No. The order is still the merchant's. The customer relationship is still the merchant's."19 That holds for the order record. The browsing, comparison and brand experience happen in someone else's interface.

Analytics blind spots

  • Pixels do not fire on direct checkout. "Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire in Google AI Mode and Gemini's direct checkout." Only server-to-server checkout started and completed events fire.10 Third-party pixels also "don't fire on direct checkouts that are completed on a Meta surface."11
  • ChatGPT referrals are easy to misclassify. A merchant analyst on the Shopify Community reported that "ChatGPT stopped adding utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links around Oct 8 and it came back from about Oct 15," and that the ChatGPT Android app now sends android-app://com.openai.chatgpt/ as the referrer, so a rule that only looks for chatgpt.com puts those visits in Direct.20
  • Shopify's own AI report mixes two things. Its per-channel sales include direct checkout orders where the buyer never visited your store, so dividing those orders by store sessions overstates conversion, as another contributor pointed out in the same thread.20

We covered the GA4 side in depth in Google AI Mode checkout on Shopify: why GA4 misses these sales.

The operational gaps nobody puts on a slide

Cart-stage apps get skipped

Agentic and accelerated checkouts jump straight to a prebuilt cart. A B2B merchant selling hazmat products reported that "orders placed via agentic/AI shopping agents (including ChatGPT and Google) have been bypassing my checkout entirely, resulting in those required fees not being applied."21 A partner in the same thread explained why: "any surcharge an app injects at the cart stage never gets applied because that step doesn't run." Another tested product-options apps and saw one lose "£10.99 gone from a £220.98 order, on the vendor's own demo."21

If your store relies on an app that adds fees, options or gift messages at the cart, test an agent purchase before Black Friday. Logic that lives in Shopify Functions or checkout extensions runs server-side and survives. Logic in cart-page JavaScript does not. Our checkout extensibility guide explains the difference.

Upsells and checkout customizations do not appear

A reviewer who let Claude buy running shoes through shop.md was "genuinely impressed," but warned merchants that if shoppers don't reach the store, "they won't see your checkout upsells or customisations."22 Your post-purchase upsells only earn on orders that pass through your checkout.

Catalog data can be wrong

A developer compared Shopify Catalog entries with live product pages across several stores and found "sold out variants still showing as available," pack sizes the store does not sell, and "specs that contradict the page."23 In the same thread, a vendor scanning 7,933 stores reported that 75.7% had no aggregateRating on any product page they sampled, and 77% had products with no GTIN or UPC.23 Agents act on what they can read. If your product data is thin, the agent guesses.

Agent orders can look like fraud

Startup Fortune noted that agent checkouts leave "the same fingerprint a card-testing bot leaves," and that "merchants are already seeing legitimate agent-placed orders get flagged as high risk for that reason alone." Its conclusion on liability: "for now the exposure sits mostly with the merchant."24 We will cover fraud and Shopify Protect in part four of this series.

For developers: the agent stack

  • Shop MCP. One server at https://mcp.shop.com for catalog search, carts and Shop Pay checkout, live since October 13, 2026. "There are no webhooks at launch, so you need to poll get_checkout for checkout status."12
  • Shop.dev. "Shop.dev gives any agent or app a single connection to Shopify Catalog, sign-in with Shop, cart, checkout, and Shop Pay," usable "with no key required."1
  • WebMCP on every storefront. Browser agents can use WebMCP tools on Liquid and Hydrogen storefronts to "search products, update the cart, and complete checkout once the buyer approves."1
  • Global Catalog MCP replaces REST on November 2. The Global Catalog REST API "stops serving traffic" on November 2, 2026. Migrate to Global Catalog MCP, which implements the Universal Commerce Protocol.25
  • Promoted Placements. Developers who drive Catalog API sales can earn the commission a business sets in Shop Campaigns, "plus 0.3% from Shopify," in early access.13

Promoted Placements raises a fair question. Slobodan Manic of No Hacks asked whether an agent finds the best product or "the product that will make whoever is behind the agent the most money," and noted that Shopify's documentation "doesn't say whether a bigger commission also moves a product up the list."26 If you build a shopping agent, disclose paid placements clearly.

How merchants and developers are receiving it

The Edition is a day old, and most reaction is to the September and October rollouts that it packages. The split is sharp.

Analysts and developers: impressed

  • Jason Greenwood, writing in The Ecommerce Edge on launch day: "the agentic commerce push is (in my opinion) ahead of almost everyone else in the market." He also read the priorities bluntly: "Every item that pushes more consumer volume through Shopify Payments and Shop Pay gets funded."27
  • The Shopify App Show, after a hands-on test: "genuinely impressed," with the caveats that 2FA is "a bit annoying if you're using it every day" and "Vague inputs, vague outputs."22

Merchants: the opt-out still stings

  • "The fact that we, as storeowners, have no ability to fully opt out of Agentic Storefronts is an egregious overstep," wrote a merchant who sells niche parts. "I do not trust AI to connect people with the correct part."28
  • After turning the setting off, the same merchant added: "Despite that, Shop can't be stopped from using your items on their agentic storefronts, so there's no getting out of it completely," and called the standard support answer "a shoddy and disingenuous answer to an upsetting situation."28
  • A developer in that thread made the point Shopify cannot fix: "External agents like ChatGPT and Perplexity shopping read your public product data and structured markup directly, and no Shopify switch sits in front of that."28

Press and agencies: cautious

  • The Keyword, on Shop MCP: "A purchase the agent completes never loads the store's website," and the changelog "says nothing about a merchant fee or a way to opt out." Its prediction: "Cost is the question merchants will ask first."29
  • Adam Tregear of Flux, an agency: "Being able to take an order inside an agent doesn't mean the agent will recommend you." He cites Flux's own study of 2,541 ecommerce brands, in which "the median brand appeared in 1.9% of AI shopping answers for its category."30

Two things are missing from the conversation so far: any public sales numbers for shop.md or Shop Pay inside agents, and any concrete merchant report of a returned agent order. A merchant asked the Shopify Community in mid-October whether anyone had received an agent order the customer said "wasn't what they asked for." When we checked, nobody had answered.31

What to do this week

  1. Open Sales channels > Agentic and see which channels are on, whether direct checkout is active, and whether your Catalog status shows an ineligibility reason.
  2. Decide on direct checkout per channel. If you depend on checkout upsells, cart-stage fee apps or GA4 attribution, consider keeping discovery on and direct checkout off until you have tested it.
  3. Fix your product data. Set the most specific product category, fill the category metafields, add GTINs, and make sure your reviews app writes aggregateRating into structured data. The agent reads the data, not the design.
  4. Publish your Knowledge Base. Approve accurate policies, shipping times and return rules. If an agent misstates your return window, the customer blames you.
  5. Place a test order through an agent. Check that fees, options and discounts survive, and see how the order appears in your admin.
  6. Watch the fee line. No fee today does not mean no fee later. Check your admin for any Agentic Storefronts fee notice.

If you want a second pair of eyes on any of this before Black Friday, our Shopify optimization team can audit your agentic settings, checkout logic and product data, with a scoped plan within 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI shopping agent?

An AI shopping agent is an AI assistant that searches for products, compares them and can complete a purchase for a shopper. On Shopify, agents such as Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct can check out with Shop Pay, and agents like ChatGPT can find Shopify products and send shoppers to the store's checkout.

What is Shop.md?

Shop.md is a Shopify skill that turns any AI agent into a personal shopper. A shopper adds it to ChatGPT, Claude or another agent, which can then search more than a billion products in Shopify Catalog, check out with Shop Pay and track orders.

Which AI agents can buy from my Shopify store?

Shopify lists Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct as personal agents with Shop Pay checkout, and names Grok Bot on its Editions page. Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta can run direct checkout inside their own apps for eligible stores. ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own checkout.

Is my store included in AI shopping by default?

Yes, if it is eligible. Shopify says agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores, and the default "Allow Shopify to manage for me" setting keeps channels active, enables direct checkout where supported and auto-enrolls you in new channels.

Can I opt out of AI agents on Shopify?

Partly. In Sales channels > Agentic you can turn off Catalog access and direct checkout for AI channels. You cannot remove your products from Shopify Catalog or from the Shop app. The only way to fully hide a product is the Unlisted status, which also hides it from Google and your online store search.

Does Shopify charge a fee for AI agent sales?

Not today. Each channel's help page says there are no fees beyond standard payment processing. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms, updated October 6, 2026, allow Shopify to assess a per-channel fee set out in your admin, possibly after a discounted or waived promotional period.

Do I get the customer's details when an AI agent places an order?

Yes. Orders from AI channels appear in your admin with channel or agent attribution and include the customer's name, email, phone number and address for that order. You remain the merchant of record and handle fulfillment, returns and customer service.

Why does GA4 miss sales from AI agents?

Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire on Google AI Mode, Gemini or Meta direct checkouts, because the purchase completes inside those apps. Only Shopify's server-to-server checkout events fire. ChatGPT referral tagging has also been inconsistent, which can push those visits into Direct.

Is it safe for shoppers to let an AI agent pay?

Shop Pay asks the shopper to approve each purchase by default and uses tokens or one-time virtual cards, so the agent and the store never see the saved card details. Shoppers can allow an agent to pay without approval only within a budget they set, and can revoke that at any time.
