Shopify Canvas: The AI Store Builder, What It Can't Do Yet, and What the New Theme Architecture Means

Shopify Canvas is Shopify's AI store builder. It shows every page of your store on one canvas and lets you change the design by asking Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent, in plain language. Shopify calls it "a new design surface where merchants build with Sidekick," and says you are not editing a mockup but "a render of the real code behind the store."1 It launched on October 1, 2026, and Shopify's help center says: "Canvas is in early access and is available only to certain stores."2
This is part five of our series on Shopify's Fall '26 Edition. The overview covers the whole release. Earlier parts covered AI shopping agents, the 2026-2027 developer deadlines and Shopify Protect before Black Friday. This article covers what Canvas does, the limits that matter for an established store, the new theme architecture underneath it, and how theme developers, agencies and merchants are reacting a month in.
The short version
- Canvas is a whole-store, AI-first editor. You see every page at once, click to edit, or ask Sidekick to make changes, "from small tweaks to full redesigns."3
- It is early access and desktop only, on plans that include theme customization.2
- It is a one-way door. "A theme that you edit or create in Canvas opens only in Canvas." It "doesn't receive theme updates," and you can't download its files.2
- Apps do not work in it yet. "You can't add or configure app blocks or app embeds in Canvas." Shopify said on October 1 it planned app support "within the next few weeks." It has not shipped.24
- No Theme Store themes, no markets. "Third-party themes aren't supported," and "You can't customize a theme for different markets in Canvas."2
- A new theme architecture sits underneath. "Page structure now lives in the Liquid template itself instead of a separate JSON file," with Tailwind styling built in. Existing themes keep working.56
- The reaction is split. Agencies that tested it call it fast. Theme developers report collapsing sales and layoffs.
What is Shopify Canvas?
Canvas is a new editor for your online store, built around Sidekick. Shopify's launch post describes it this way: "For the first time, merchants can see every page laid out together, pan across them to understand how the store feels as a whole, then zoom in to work on the details."1 You can still click elements to edit them, or describe what you want in chat.
Under the hood, "Sidekick now works directly on the theme's files," and "As it builds, Sidekick validates its code and reviews screenshots to inspect how its changes landed on Canvas."1 That is the important difference from the classic theme editor. The theme editor changes settings a theme exposes. Canvas changes the theme's code.
Shopify is careful about how far along it is. Ben Sehl, Director of Product: "We're early here and Canvas is not replacing the existing editor yet. Things will change quickly, and there are gaps we still need to close."1
How to open it
If your store has access, go to Online Store > Themes and create a new theme in Canvas, or duplicate a Shopify or custom theme in Canvas. "Your original theme stays in the current theme editor."7 Your staff need the Edit code permission to open it.2
The numbers Shopify uses
- "From no theme to a launched store 20% faster with Canvas," on the Fall '26 Edition page, with no footnote, sample or method.8
- Sidekick made "more than twenty-five million edits to themes in the first half of 2026," according to the launch post.1
- Ben Sehl recalls that building his own brand's store "still took me two weeks," and says "an entrepreneur on Shopify can build a fully custom store in twenty minutes" today.1 That is an anecdote, not a benchmark.
What Canvas can't do yet
This is the list that decides whether Canvas is for you. All of it comes from Shopify's own help center as of November 1, 2026.29
| Limitation | Shopify's wording |
|---|---|
| Theme Store themes | "Third-party themes aren't supported." |
| Apps | "You can't add or configure app blocks or app embeds in Canvas." |
| Markets | "You can't customize a theme for different markets in Canvas." |
| Translations | "You can't translate theme content directly in Canvas." Use Translate & Adapt. |
| Theme updates | "A theme that you edit in Canvas doesn't receive theme updates." |
| Downloading | "You can't download the theme files for a theme that you edited in Canvas." |
| Going back | "A theme that you edit or create in Canvas opens only in Canvas." |
| Undo | "When Sidekick makes a change, your undo history is cleared." |
| Devices | "Canvas is available only on desktop devices." |
Two notes on that table.
Rollouts improved since launch. At launch, Canvas did not support rollouts at all.7 Now "You can add a theme that you edited in Canvas to a rollout as a replacement for your main theme," though you still can't edit it from the rollout.2
Shopify's documentation disagrees with itself on downloads. The help center says you can't download a Canvas theme. A Shopify developer doc says "Themes created with Canvas include the base theme's AGENTS.md, so you can pull one of these themes to see a complete example."10 Until Shopify reconciles the two, assume you cannot export your work.
The app problem in practice
Most established Shopify stores depend on apps for reviews, upsells, subscriptions and more. On October 1, Shopify told developers: "Canvas doesn't support theme app extensions yet," and "Themes edited in Canvas also won't appear when your app lists a store's themes." A Shopify product lead added: "We plan to support theme app extensions in Canvas within the next few weeks."4
A month later, it has not shipped. When a developer reported that duplicating a theme into Canvas seemed to break app extensions, Shopify's reply was that "Theme app extensions aren't officially supported in Canvas yet," and that extensions already enabled in the code keep rendering on the live storefront, even though you can't manage them in Canvas.11
Should you use Canvas?
Good fit today
- A new store with no existing theme, few apps and one market.
- A brand starting from a Shopify theme like Horizon, wanting a custom look without a developer.
- Experimenting on a duplicate. Your original theme stays in the regular editor, so you can try Canvas on a copy without risking your live store.
Wait
- Stores on a paid Theme Store theme. It is not supported.
- Stores that rely on app blocks or embeds for reviews, upsells, bundles or subscriptions.
- Multi-market or multi-language stores.
- Anything you need to change before Black Friday. A Canvas theme cannot go back to the regular editor, and Sidekick changes clear your undo history. Peak season is not the time to find out what that means.
Ask Phill, an agency that tested it hands-on, summed it up: "Building with Sidekick in Canvas is fast and smooth," but "Basics such as a layers panel, drag and drop, and complete block settings are still missing," and "It is not ready yet for larger enterprise brands."12
The new theme architecture under Canvas
Canvas is built on a change to how Shopify themes are written. Shopify's developer post: "Page structure now lives in the Liquid template itself instead of a separate JSON file, with blocks, typed contracts, partial updates, markdown files that guide agents, and Tailwind styling built in."5 The reason is readability, for humans and AI alike: "Developers and coding agents can read a whole page from top to bottom, instead of piecing it together from JSON and a tree of sections."5
What actually changed
- The
{% block %}tag renders a theme block directly from a Liquid template. Shopify's starter Skeleton theme now composes pages "directly from blocks, snippets, and inline markup," with nosections/folder and no JSON templates.613 - The
{% partial %}tag "defines a named region of server-rendered HTML that JavaScript can refresh without reloading the full page."6 - AGENTS.md and DESIGN.md are optional files at the theme root that teach coding agents and Sidekick how the theme is built. Each "can be up to 50 KB," and it "isn't served on the storefront."10
- Per-page CSS. "Starting April 20, 2026, Shopify only delivers the CSS from
{% stylesheet %}tags that are relevant to the sections, blocks, and snippets rendered on each page." The Edition presents this as new, but it has been live since April.14 - Tailwind. Shopify says Tailwind styling is "built in."5 We could not find developer documentation describing how, which version, or how it is configured.
Do existing themes need to change?
No. When Shopify previewed the block and partial tags in July, it said: "Existing themes continue to work with sections, theme settings, and JSON templates. This preview adds a Liquid-first composition model alongside the existing theme architecture."6 No deprecation of JSON templates has been announced.
The naming has caused confusion anyway. Theme developer Adam Chipperfield wrote that "the phrasing 'new theme architecture' has obviously got merchants wondering if they're running outdated themes," and asked Shopify for a guide to what is actually different.15 If your store runs on a working Online Store 2.0 theme, nothing forces you to rebuild.
What this means for Horizon
If you built on Horizon, you are on a Shopify-developed theme, which is the kind Canvas supports. Shopify has not said which base theme Canvas uses for new stores. We explained Horizon's internals in Shopify Horizon theme explained, and the build-or-customize decision in Horizon vs a custom theme. For new custom builds, the block-first structure is worth learning now, because it is what Sidekick and Canvas are designed to read.
A conflict for Theme Store developers
Shopify's Theme Store requirements still say "All templates must support sections (JSON templates)." The same page says "Shopify's Skeleton Theme is the only approved codebase for Theme Store development," and "New theme submissions built on or derived from Dawn or Horizon are not eligible."16 But the current Skeleton theme uses no sections and no JSON templates. A developer asked in October whether block-first themes are eligible, noting that "the current Skeleton GitHub repository uses a new architecture based on {% block %} and {% partial %}, with Liquid templates and no traditional sections/ directory or JSON templates." When we checked, Shopify had not answered.17
How people are receiving Canvas
Theme developers: alarmed
The strongest reaction comes from people who sell themes, and it started before Canvas.
- On Shopify's developer forum, Shopify told theme partners: "There is not yet full backwards compatibility with 3P themes," and "We expect themes to be a starting point for merchants to realize their vision."18
- In a September thread about falling Theme Store visibility, one theme company wrote: "We laid off our team of 15, hand picked over 15 years for their expertise in this very niche form of development." Another said they had to "let go of 80% of our team in June," and that "For five straight months, revenue wasn't even enough to cover salaries and the rest of our costs."19
- A developer tracking ThemeForest found "the top three themes currently get around 20-30 sales each per week. In August last year, they were getting around 70-90 sales per week."19
- Shopify's side, as relayed by a developer from a Shopify event: "Theme store traffic was down, but conversions from that traffic were up since the redesign launched last July."19
App developers and partners: frustrated
- "It seems pretty concerning, and honestly a little crazy, to roll out and recommend (I assume) a new storefront editing experience to merchants when apps and app blocks aren't supported yet," wrote one app developer on launch day.4
- By late October: "We are starting to get more contacts from merchants and for some of them is quite confusing the fact that apps don't work with Canvas."4
- A Shopify partner put the agency fear plainly: "As a Partner, this change means there's no longer any need of my design/development services, so what's the point of me recommending Shopify anymore?"4
Agencies: impressed, with caveats
- Anatta: "We think Canvas is good news, and not in a hedged way. The agencies that lose from this are the ones billing for hero-image swaps." And: "Treat every Canvas change as a code change, because it is one."20
- eCommerce Fastlane's Steve Hutt: "Canvas makes the code cheap." The risk: "It will happily build a beautiful store around a brand that has not decided what it is." And for agencies: "Agencies that mainly sell implementation hours have a pricing conversation coming in 2027."21
- Ask Phill: "Design skills matter because Canvas changes who can make a change, not who can judge one."12
- Debutify, which sells themes: "The launch gaps, especially outside themes, app blocks, Markets, and theme updates, are exactly what established stores depend on today."22
Merchants: curious and cautious
Merchant voices are still few. One merchant who tried it wrote on the Shopify Community: "I can see how it could feel welcoming to someone new to Shopify," while noting that a Canvas copy opens only in Canvas and changes do not sync back.23 A reply gave the advice we would give: treat the first Canvas edit as a one-way door, and keep buying themes for stores that depend on apps.23
What's coming next
Shopify has announced that you will be able to design stores with Canvas from AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude. The help center is clear that this is not live: "Designing stores with Canvas has been announced for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Muse, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot, but isn't available in the tools yet."24 For how those same AI tools are starting to shop and buy from Shopify stores, see part two on AI shopping agents. App support, Theme Store theme support and markets are the gaps to watch. Shopify has said it is working toward theme compatibility "before Canvas begins to become the default editor," which tells you where this is heading.18
What to do
If you run a store
- Try Canvas on a duplicate, never on your live theme, and never before Black Friday on a store that depends on apps.
- List your app blocks and embeds first. If you rely on them, Canvas is not ready for you.
- Write down what makes your brand distinct before you prompt. Canvas will build whatever you describe, including something generic.
- Keep your current theme updated in the regular editor. A Canvas copy stops receiving theme updates.
If you build themes or run an agency
- Learn the block-first structure and AGENTS.md now. It is how Sidekick reads a theme.
- Add AGENTS.md and DESIGN.md to client themes so Sidekick edits respect your design system.
- Watch the Theme Store requirements page for the JSON template conflict to be resolved.
- Rethink pricing that depends on small edits. The work that remains is judgment, design systems and anything Canvas cannot do yet.
If you want help deciding whether Canvas fits your store, or a custom theme built so Sidekick can work with it safely, our Shopify development team can review your setup and give you a scoped plan within 48 hours.
Frequently asked questions
What is Shopify Canvas?
Shopify Canvas is Shopify's AI store builder. It shows every page of your store on one canvas and lets you edit the design by clicking or by asking Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent. Sidekick works directly on the theme's code. Canvas launched on October 1, 2026 and is in early access.
Is Shopify Canvas available to everyone?
No. Shopify's help center says Canvas is in early access and available only to certain stores, on desktop only, on plans that include theme customization. Staff need the Edit code permission to open it.
Does Shopify Canvas work with apps?
Not yet. You can't add or configure app blocks or app embeds in Canvas. Shopify said in October it planned to support theme app extensions within weeks, but as of November 1, 2026 it had not shipped.
Can I use a Theme Store theme in Canvas?
No. Canvas works only with themes developed by Shopify and with custom themes. Third-party themes from the Shopify Theme Store aren't supported.
Can I switch a theme back from Canvas to the theme editor?
No. A theme you edit or create in Canvas opens only in Canvas. It also stops receiving theme updates, and you can't download its files. Duplicate your theme first and experiment on the copy.
What is Shopify's new theme architecture?
It is a block-first way to write themes in which page structure lives in the Liquid template instead of a JSON file. It adds the block and partial Liquid tags, AGENTS.md and DESIGN.md files that guide AI agents, per-page CSS delivery and, according to Shopify, built-in Tailwind styling. Canvas is built on it.
Do I need to rebuild my existing Shopify theme?
No. Shopify says existing themes continue to work with sections, theme settings and JSON templates, and no deprecation has been announced. The new architecture runs alongside the existing one.
Is the Shopify Theme Store going away?
Shopify has not said so. It says it is "deeply considering the role of the theme store" and expects themes to be "a starting point" for merchants. Theme developers report sharply lower sales in 2026, and some predict the Theme Store will shrink as Canvas becomes the default editor.
